Dry winter air can suck the moisture right out of skin, leaving it chapped, flaky and dehydrated. Here are some smart, skin-smoothing strategies for thwarting dryness—from head to toe—throughout the big chill: |

FACE
Never face the day without sunscreen, no matter what the season.
If your favorite face cream doesn't have one with SPF 15 or higher, layer a separate sunscreen on top.
▪ During the day, apply a lightweight moisturizer that works well under makeup.
▪ Use a richer moisturizer at night.
BODY
▪ Choose the correct moisturizer for your skin type: oily skin should go for a lightweight, fast-absorbing lotion. For dryer skin, apply a heavier cream. On extremely dry, flaky patches, rub in rich ointment.
▪ If you’re acne prone, make sure the product is labeled “noncomedogenic” (non pore-clogging).
HANDS
▪ Cold weather causes dry hands, so put gloves on before heading out the door.
▪ Avoid using hand products, anti-bacterial wipes or moisturizers with alcohol (except the non-drying cetearyl alcohol), which strips skin of moisture.
▪ Switch to a mild hand cleanser in the winter; apply moisturizer after every washing.
ELBOWS
▪ Loss of moisture can easily disrupt and dehydrate elbow skin.
▪ Keep elbows smooth by exfoliating twice a week and moisturizing daily with a thick cream.
FEET
▪ Feet suffer from dryness, too. Exfoliate using a pumice stone on your soles while in the shower, then load up on hydrating lotion afterward.
A BETTER SOAK
▪ Moisturizers work better when applied to slightly damp skin.
▪ Exfoliation rids the skin of dead cells so moisturizer can penetrate more easily.
